Team selection

The Indian Super League was founded in October 2013. On April 13, 2014, the eight franchises were announced.

Player selection

There were two drafts to select players and distribute them to the teams, similar to the United States. The Domestic Payers Draft took place in Mumbai from July 22-23 , 2014 . About this 84 players were distributed to six teams. The FC Goa and Northeast United did not participate because they were able to take players from the I-League teams from their respective owners.

At the ISL Inaugural International Draft on August 21, 2014, 49 non-Indian players were distributed to the individual teams. The FC Pune City secured with Bruno Cirillo the first player in this draft.
