Peter Reid (born June 20, 1956 in Huyton , Merseyside ) is a former English national football player and current coach .

Player career

He began his professional career in 1974 at the age of 18 with the Bolton Wanderers , with whom he had previously played in his youth. In 1978 he won his first professional title with the Wanderers when the club won the second division championship. After two years in the first division, Bolton was relegated again and Reid moved to Everton in the English first division for £ 60,000 in 1982 . An absolute stroke of luck for Reid, as he became part of a team that, together with Liverpool FC, dominated English football in the 1980s.

In 1984 he won the FA Cup , the championships in 1985 and 1987 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1984/85 with Everton . The triple triumph of the championship, the European Cup and the FA Cup was denied to him and the club in 1985. In the final of the FA Cup they lost against Manchester United 1-0. Peter Reid's opponent Kevin Moran saw the red card for a ruthless foul on him. It was the first red card in the history of the FA Cup final.

At that time and at the height of his career, Reid was considered by many to be one of Europe's best midfielders. In 1985 he was named England's Footballer of the Year by the PFA. This also earned him the nomination for the national team of England, for which he played 13 games. He was in the national team for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico , where he played in the quarter-final against Argentina.

For Everton he made a total of 24 games (13 goals) before he moved to Queens Park Rangers in 1989 and moved to Manchester City a year later .

In 2006 he was named one of the "Everton Giants" by Everton FC.

Coaching career

Club coach

He began his coaching career with Manchester City in November 1990; he followed Howard Kendall , his former coach from Everton. In the first season of the Premier League 1992/93 it was only ninth place and in the following year Reid had to vacate his post after a bad start to the season.

In October 1993, after his release from City, he laced his football boots again. Southampton's trainer Ian Branfoot persuaded Reid to play again. While he only made eight games for the Saints from October to December, he gave them the support and stability they needed in midfield. When Branfoot was released in January 1994, Reid left too. He changed clubs again as a player and finally stopped playing football in the 1990s after the stations in Notts County and Bury .

He returned as a coach in March 1995. He took over the vacant coaching post at the relegation-threatened AFC Sunderland in the 2nd division. The relegation could be prevented with Reid as coach and in the next year Reid led the club to the second division championship and promotion to the Premier League. In 1996 fans of the club managed to reach the top 50 of the English charts under the name "Simply Red and White" with the song "Cheer Up Peter Reid".

On the last day of the match, however, Sunderland lost the decisive game and had to relegate again. The new stadium, which was supposed to replace the old Roker Park , saw its premiere as a second division stadium . 1997/98 the direct re-promotion was missed by one place and the club had to go to the relegation play-offs. In the final, they lost in a memorable and highly dramatic game on penalties and thus missed promotion. However, Reid managed to get the team back up and make the next year's promotion perfect. The club achieved this with a record of 105 points.

As a climber, Reid Sunderland led straight to seventh place and narrowly missed qualifying for the UEFA Cup . It was one of the highest placements by a newcomer in Premier League history. Kevin Phillips was the Premier League top scorer and winner of the European Golden Shoe with 30 goals. Peter Reid was at the same time as head coach of Sunderland and coach of the England U-21 national team.

It almost looked as if Reid could continue the soaring with Sunderland in 2000/01 when they were temporarily second in the Premier League, but in the end only 7th place jumped out again. In October 2002 Reid was fired at Sunderland for unsuccessfulness and was without a coaching position until March 2003 before he resumed his work as an interim coach at Leeds United.

Leeds United was in the relegation battle at the time and was more than £ 80m in debt after investing around £ 100m in new players in the years before but not winning a single title. Reid managed to hold the Premier League with Leeds and became the club's head coach. Due to the financial situation Leeds had to sell Harry Kewell and Peter Reid could only sign cheap players. After they found themselves again in the relegation battle and lost 6-1 to Portsmouth FC in November 2003 , Reid was dismissed as coach after only six months at Leeds.

Leeds was followed in May 2004 by the then second division Coventry City , which Reid was to lead into the Premier League. In January 2005, Reid made his post available again. Coventry was only in 20th place on the table and thus far from being promoted to the Premier League.

In July 2008 it was announced that Peter Reid was one of the candidates for the post as national coach of Thailand. Besides him, Holger Osieck was also a candidate, but the FAT ultimately decided on Reid.

National coach

Peter Reid was officially introduced as Thailand's national coach in September 2008. He got a 4-year contract worth 252 million baht .

His job and goal is to lead the Thai national team to the 2014 World Cup . Thailand has never been able to qualify for a World Cup and it would be a bit of a sensation if this endeavor succeeds.

Reid was also able to record first successes when Thailand won the T&T Cup in Vietnam in November 2008. In this North Korea and host Vietnam defeated. A month later, Thailand hosted the ASEAN soccer championship alongside Indonesia . The aim was to win the most important football tournament in Southeast Asia for the first time since 2004 . They survived the group stage with ease and made it to the final, where they met Vietnam. With a goal by Vietnam to make it 1-1 in stoppage time, however, the title ultimately went to the Vietnamese.

A report in the Daily Mail during the ASEAN football championship caused confusion that he did not rule out his current contract with Thailand if his former club Sunderland wanted to sign him as a coach or manager. Reid withdrew the testimony as quickly as possible, saying that he would perform his contract.

Despite the confusion, he took his job as national coach of Thailand very seriously. Almost every weekend he can be seen in a stadium in Thailand to watch games and players. He was helped by English people living in Thailand in the beginning, who have been following football in Thailand for years and are very familiar with both clubs and players.

With the Thai national soccer team he reached the final of the ASEAN soccer championship in December 2008 , but he could not lead the eleven to the title.

In September 2009, the Thai Association separated from Reid. During a trip to England, together with the president of Thailand, Reid decided that he would like to be a coach at Sunderland AFC . He also wanted to keep his job as national coach Thailand. However, the association did not agree to this and released Reid from his contract.
