Career

In the club

Kewell, the son of an Englishman and an Australian, went to Westfields Sports High School and started playing football there for the first time. At the age of 15 Harry Kewell got a contract with Leeds United , where he first played on March 30, 1996 in a 0-1 home defeat by Middlesbrough FC . Kewell scored his first goal in October 1997 in a 3-1 win over Stoke City in the English League Cup . The sporting highlight at Leeds United was reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2001 . The following year the club got into financial difficulties and was just able to prevent relegation.

In 2003, Kewell finally moved to Liverpool for £ 5 million , where he won the Champions League in 2005 . For the 2008/2009 season , Kewell moved to the Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul . Not only was Kewell one of the favorite players of Galatasaray fans, but his teammates and the Galatasaray board members also valued him, largely for his work discipline and personality.

His contract with Galatasaray Istanbul ended on May 31, 2011 and has not been renewed. In August 2011 he was signed by Melbourne Victory . After a season he returned to England for family reasons. After nine months without a club, he moved to the Qatari first division club al-Gharafa Sports Club in April 2013 . There he could not keep his form, whereby his contract was terminated after a month by the club. For the 2013-14 season, Kewell returned to the A-League and signed a contract with Melbourne Heart . In March 2014 he ended his career after 18 years as a professional.

Career as a coach

From July 2015 he was the coach of Watford FC's U-21s . Since the 2017/18 season he was coach of the English fourth division team Crawley Town and led the club to 14th place in the final table. At the end of August 2018, Kewell moved within the league together with his assistant coach Warren Feeney to bottom Notts County . His engagement with Notts County ended ten weeks after his engagement. Kewell had won three of 14 competitive games by then and had led the club from the bottom of the table, but club president Alan Hardy said in mid-November 2018 on the occasion of Kewell's dismissal, "that there is no reason to continue something that we do not think will work."

On August 1, 2020, Kewell was introduced as the new coach of English fourth division club Oldham Athletic .
