Ryan Jared Thomas (born December 20, 1994 in Te Puke ) is a New Zealand soccer player . He plays in the Dutch first division PSV Eindhoven and in the New Zealand national team in the position of central midfielder .

Career

Born in Te Puke , Thomas started playing football at Melville United, New Zealand . In 2011 he went to Waikato FC . On October 23, 2011, he made his debut in a 5-1 home defeat by Auckland City FC in the Waikatos jersey. On February 18, 2012, Thomas scored his first goal in professional football when he scored the intermittent 2-1 tie in the 2-4 home defeat against Hawke's Bay United . In 2013 he followed his sponsor and coach at Waikato Duncan Edge to the Olé Football Academy.

For the 2013/14 season Ryan Thomas moved to the 2nd team of the Dutch first division club PEC Zwolle . There he was promoted to the first team on October 16, 2013. He made his debut on November 2nd in a 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven . In the 3-1 home win against Roda JC Kerkrade , Thomas became the match winner. In the 19th minute he scored the 1-0 lead for his club, which was also his first competitive game goal. In the 77th minute he provoked a foul in Roda's penalty area, which resulted in a penalty whistle. The penalty due was converted by Guyon Fernandez . In the 2013/14 season he won the KNVB Cup with PEC Zwolle . In the final he was able to pave the way to victory against Ajax Amsterdam with two early hits, in minutes 8 and 12. In the next 2014/15 season , Zwolle won the Johan Cruijff Schaal and they were able to reach the final of the KNVB Cup again, which however was lost 2-0 to FC Groningen . In 2015 he was named Oceania's Footballer of the Year .

On August 10, 2018, his move to league rivals PSV Eindhoven was announced. On August 22, he suffered a serious knee injury during training and was out for the entire 2018/19 season . On October 6, 2019 (9th matchday), he made his debut for PSV, almost a year and a half after his last competitive game, when he came on as a substitute in the final phase of the 4-1 home win against VVV-Venlo . On February 8, 2020 (22nd matchday), he scored his first league goal for the Boeren in a 3-0 home win against Willem II Tilburg . In this 2019/20 season , he played eleven league games in which he scored two goals and as many assists.
