Ryan William Nelsen , ONZM (born October 18, 1977 in Christchurch ) is a former New Zealand soccer player and current coach .
Career as a player
society
Nelsen began his career in the youth of Christchurch United , where he played on the professional team. In 1997 he moved to the university team at Greenboro University in the USA . In 2001 he moved to DC United in Major League Soccer . After he took over the captaincy in 2003, he was also voted into the best team in the league. He did the same in the following season, in which he won their fourth MLS Cup with DC United .
The central defender moved to England for the Blackburn Rovers during the 2004/05 season , and he became their team captain. In 2007 Nelson stood with Blackburn in the final of the FA Cup , which was lost to Chelsea after extra time. As a defensive player, Nelson completed over 150 games for the Blackburn Rovers, although he was out for almost a season due to a serious hamstring injury.
During the winter break in 2012, the contract with Nelsen was terminated; he moved to Tottenham Hotspur . After half a year in Tottenham, Nelsen moved to the Queens Park Rangers for the 2012/13 season , with whom he signed a one-year contract. On February 1, 2013, he retired to become head coach of Toronto FC . Nelsen played his last game on January 29, 2013 against Manchester City (0-0).
National team
Ryan Nelsen made his debut for the New Zealand national team in 1999 , but due to injuries and obligations to his clubs, he has so far made relatively few appearances for the All Whites . He did not play for the national team for four years until 2008, but then he put the obligations towards his club in the background and apart from the senior team he was also a player beyond the age limit at the Olympic Games in Beijing. While he rarely scores at the club, the defender, who is always dangerous even in set pieces, has often been successful for New Zealand. With a little more luck, he could have become one of the very few players to have taken part in three Confederations Cups , but after his appearances in Mexico in 1999 and France in 2003, he was injured in South Africa in 2009. The highlight of his national team career was undoubtedly the playoff games against Bahrain, when he captained the team for their first World Cup participation in 28 years. At the finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he failed with New Zealand unbeaten in the preliminary round.
Career as a coach
On January 8, 2013, Toronto FC signed Nelsen as the head coach of its MLS team . Since Nelsen was still under contract as a player with the Queens Park Rangers until June 30, 2013 , it was initially unclear when he would take over as coach. Nelsen later agreed with the Queens Park Rangers to take over his new job on February 1, 2013. He held the post in Toronto until he was released in late August 2014.
