Career

societies

Similar to Josip Šimunić , Viduka's career began with the Melbourne Knights (from 1993), a multiple Australian champion whose team was made up of Croatian immigrants . In 1995 he was courted by Franjo Tuđman , the Croatian President, and then left the club to join Croatia Zagreb . He stayed there for three seasons and was able to win the double with the club .

In the second qualifying round of the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League , Croatia Zagreb knocked out Scottish champions Celtic Glasgow . When Viduka then expressed his interest in moving to Scotland, he was signed by Celtic for three million British pounds in November 1998 . He signed a four-year contract, but left his new club in December 1998 without having played a single time. On January 15, 1999, Viduka returned to Celtic and stated that he had been considering an end to his career due to stress reasons. In addition, there had been problems transferring his transfer fee to Dinamo Zagreb, which could only be resolved in April 1999. In February 1999 Viduka ran first for the reserve team from Celtic, but then made his debut in the second half of the 1998/99 season in the Scottish Premier League . His red card in the championship game against Dunfermline Athletic on May 8, 1999, which he had received for spitting on opposing midfielder Marc Millar and which, in addition to a fine, also resulted in a suspension of several weeks, caused a stir . Viduka scored 25 goals in his first full season in the championship, becoming the top scorer in the 1999/2000 Scottish Premier League . In May 2000 he was named Scotland's Footballer of the Year .

By June 2000, Viduka's services were worth £ 6 million for English club Leeds United . There he played together with Alan Smith , Robbie Keane and Harry Kewell in attack. After being named Oceania's Footballer of the Year 2000 in January 2001 and third-best scorer in the 2000/01 Premier League with 17 goals , he signed a new five-year contract with Leeds United in June 2001. At the end of the 2002/03 season, the club finished only 15th despite 20 goals from Viduka and thus missed participation in a European competition. In the following season , the highly indebted club was penultimate and had to relegate to the Football League Championship .

Viduka moved to Middlesbrough FC in July 2004 , with whom he reached the 2005/06 UEFA Cup final. For the 2007/08 season , the striker moved to Newcastle United on a free transfer , where he signed a two-year contract. At the end of his first season for Newcastle, Viduka suffered an Achilles tendon injury that resulted in a break of several months. In order not to be absent any longer, he decided not to have an operation and instead had himself injected at the beginning of the 2008/09 season . After the club was relegated to the second-rate Football League Championship in 2009 , his contract was not renewed. Viduka turned down a follow-up offer from Fulham FC and instead returned with his family to his hometown of Melbourne. After a long time without a club, the father of three sons ended his career.

National team

On June 8, 1994 and June 12, 1994 Viduka came in the 1-0 victories in the friendlies against South Africa to his first two appearances in the Australian national team . It was not until 1997 that he was taken into account again and later named team captain. He also held this position at the 2006 World Cup . In September 2006, Viduka announced his retirement from the national team after 37 games in which he had scored six times. But it was quickly followed by the withdrawal of the resignation and Mark Viduka led the Socceroos and the Asian Cup in 2007 as captain of.
