Robert David "Robbie" Keane (born July 8, 1980 in Tallaght , Dublin ) is a former Irish football player . As a striker , whose skills as a goal scorer and a bit of a lagging behind in the game, he holds the Irish national team 's records as the player with the most hits (68 goals) and the most appearances (146). His most famous station in club football was Tottenham Hotspur (2002 to 2008 and 2009 to 2011). After his active career, he moved to the coaching staff of the Irish national team.

Club career

Career start: Wolverhampton Wanderers (1997–1999)

Robbie Keane learned to play football while playing for Dublin club Crumlin United while in school . The young striker's talent was recognized early on and he received offers from Wolverhampton Wanderers and his future professional club Liverpool FC . Keane decided against Liverpool, however, as he figured he had a better chance of appearing in the first team at Wolverhampton in the First Division . After moving at the age of 15, he first played for the youth team of the "Wolves" for some time, before making a highly acclaimed debut on August 9, 1997 after a very successful youth season in 1996/97 (but only two appearances in the reserve team) second division when he scored both goals straight away in a 2-0 win over Norwich City . In total, he got eleven league goals in his debut season 1997/98, mostly acting a bit withdrawn behind the two storm peaks. Although he lost his regular place in the closing stages of the season after a few games on the right wing, his performances brought him the nomination for the second division team of the year (" PFA Team of the Year ").

In the following season 1998/99 Keane scored 16 competitive goals and although he went through two longer injury breaks in autumn 1998 (with seven missed games and then brief "demotion" to the bench) and from March 1999, he was the most accurate player on his team - the absence due to the posting for the U-20 World Cup in Nigeria , the club could only insufficiently compensate. His marksmanship made him attractive to other clubs and for six million British pounds, Keane moved to Coventry City in the Premier League after the second match day . This was the most expensive transfer of a British or Irish teenager to date, whereby Aston Villa had previously been the most promising prospect, but who then refused to pay the advertised price - in addition, there were unsuccessful offers from Middlesbrough FC .

Sporting breakthrough: Coventry, Milan and Leeds (1999–2002)

As in Wolverhampton, Keane also scored two goals for Coventry on his debut. With a total of eleven goals in the first 21 games alongside four different attacking partners, he fitted in well at the highest level in English football and in August 1999 the Premier League named him Footballer of the Month . His personal highlight was Christmas 1999, when he scored a tricky winning goal against Arsenal FC and duped Tony Adams and David Seaman . Although his performances in the second half of the season (also due to injury) slackened a little, despite this, after the end of the season he took second place in the young professional category in the election of England's Footballer of the Year .

In the summer of 2000 he was brought to Inter Milan by Marcello Lippi . On July 30, 2000, he signed a five-year deal with Inter that brought Coventry £ 13 million into the coffers. However, his time in Milan was not very successful. After Lippi had to vacate the coaching chair soon after Keane's arrival, the Irishman only made six league appearances under the new coach Marco Tardelli in the storm formation that usually started with Ronaldo and Christian Vieri . In December 2000, Keane was therefore loaned to Leeds United .

He settled in quickly at Leeds, scoring the first goal for Leeds in his first game against Middlesbrough and scoring five more goals in the seven games that followed, including an overhead kick against his former club from Coventry. The problem was that he was suspended for the Champions League games of the current season and often had to fight with Alan Smith for the regular place in attack at the side of Mark Viduka . Nevertheless, he made a good impression during the loan period with his technical skills, willingness to run and generally unselfish way of playing and so Leeds signed him in May 2001 for twelve million pounds. The 2001/02 season was less successful for Keane with just three league goals. His best performances were mostly in cup competitions, including a hat trick against Leicester City and three goals in the UEFA Cup against Marítimo Funchal , ES Troyes AC and Grasshoppers Zurich . When Leeds bought a new striker, Robbie Fowler, in November 2001 , Keane mostly only played the role of substitute. Even at the beginning of the subsequent 2002/03 season, his perspective did not improve - although he was one of the "Stars" at the 2002 World Cup - and so he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in London at the end of August 2002 for seven million pounds .

End of "homeland search" with interruptions: Tottenham Hotspur (2002–2011)

As the most important transfer from Tottenham under Glenn Hoddle in the 2002/03 season, it was not long before Keane established himself in the new team and at the end of the season he was the top scorer of the "Spurs" with thirteen league goals - his best performance was by Hat trick against Everton FC . His strength, which, in addition to being able to act quickly in front of the opposing goal, was mainly due to the fact that he often took part in building up the game by retreating into midfield, found better use again. Although he suffered from injuries and a peat lull at the beginning of the 2003/04 season, his performances stabilized over the course of the year. The arrival of the new storm partner Jermain Defoe was largely responsible for this ; in addition , the tall Frédéric Kanouté provided further options in the attacking game. Keane withstood the increasing competition, which was fueled in the middle of the 2004/05 season by the Egyptian newcomer Mido , and in the second half of the season he significantly increased his own goal rate instead of Defoe, who was suddenly not very accurate. In contrast to his previous positions, Keane was now mainly valued for his consistency and in what is now his fourth year, the crowd favorite with 16 Premier League goals became Tottenham's top scorer for the third time. When the Bulgarian international Dimitar Berbatow joined the club in the summer of 2006 , it initially took some time for the new offensive formation to settle in, but after only two goals in the first eleven games and short-term injury concerns in December 2006, Keane ended the season with 17 goals from the last 22 mandatory encounters. In addition, he often represented the regular captain Ledley King . In his last season for the time being, 2007/08 for the North Londoners, he was together with Berbatow again the most accurate player of his club, although he was often only used in midfield after the commitment of Darren Bent . In the match against Sunderland AFC , he scored the 100th competitive goal for Tottenham on January 19, 2008. In addition, he said goodbye in 2008 by winning the league cup after defeating Chelsea 2-1 with his men in the final . There he was substituted for the more defensive Younès Kaboul in extra time a good 20 minutes before the end . As "Leitwolf" and Tottenham's three-time player of the year, he was recommended for top English clubs and so the then English record champions Liverpool FC secured Keanes services for no less than £ 20.3 million at the end of July 2008 - although Keanes had previously been contracted in London had extended until 2012.

By signing a four-year contract with the "Reds", Keane fulfilled a childhood dream, but hopes for a profitable storm partnership with Fernando Torres were not fulfilled. First of all, the Irishman had to wait until October 1, 2008 on the occasion of the 3-1 victory in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven for the first competitive goal - this was also Keane's first ever goal in the Champions League. In the domestic league, he was only successful in November 2008 when he contributed two goals to the win against West Bromwich Albion . From then on, his performances stabilized somewhat, but coach Rafael Benítez took him less into account regardless. In his 24 compulsory appearances for Liverpool, Benítez Keane made 17 changes and as a substitute he occasionally stayed on the bench when the team urgently needed a goal. After a month of speculation regarding a return to Tottenham, this was realized shortly before the end of the transfer window on February 2, 2009 for a transfer fee of twelve million pounds. Keane himself commented on the early failure in Liverpool "that he has never regretted the move, but that he did not get along with coach Rafael Benítez".

After his return, Keane immediately took over the role of team captain for the permanently injured King and in the first six appearances for the "Spurs", who were now in danger of relegation, the team remained undefeated under the new coach Harry Redknapp - in the end the team was still in the top Half of the table and Keane had contributed five goals in fourteen league games. In the 2009/10 season, Keane scored nine goals in 25 competitive games, with his four goals in the 5-0 win against Burnley FC below average in terms of his goalscoring rate - although taking into account that he often acted withdrawn in left midfield. On February 1, 2010, Tottenham's management allowed Keanes to move to Celtic Glasgow on loan until the end of the current season . There he quickly developed into a crowd favorite with twelve goals in sixteen league games, but after the loan period expired, he went back to the Spurs.

The 2010/11 season took a similar course for Keane when he first played at Tottenham in the first half of the season (but remained there without any scoring) and then was loaned to league rivals West Ham United for the rest of the season at the end of January 2011 . For the "Hammers" Keane came nine times in the Premier League to train (but he was only five times in the starting XI). In the end , the team relegated to the second division and Keane returned to Tottenham.

Moved to North America and finished his career

Robbie Keane as the LA Galaxy player (2013).

In August 2011, LA Galaxy signed Keane, who, along with David Beckham and Landon Donovan, occupied one of the three reserved places for players above the maximum wage limit ( Juan Pablo Ángel had to make way for Keane and had previously been sold to CD Chivas USA ). On his debut for LA Galaxy, Keane scored the first goal against the San José Earthquakes after a good 20 minutes and at the end of the first season in 2011 he won the MLS Cup . In the final against Houston Dynamo he prepared Donovan's 1-0 winning goal and the following year he played a key role in defending his title when he finally decided the final against the same opponent with a penalty to 3-1 in stoppage time. Between those two trophies, Keane was on loan back in England until the start of the North American 2012 season in March 2012 at Aston Villa . After serving as a substitute, he contributed two goals to the 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on his starting line-up . He scored a third and final goal against Newcastle United (1: 2).

During Donovan's absence early in the 2013 season, coach Bruce Arena in Los Angeles promoted him to team captaincy. He played his last games for Atlético de Kolkata in the Indian Super League . In November 2018, he announced his retirement after 23 years as a professional player.

National team career

Keane played in various Irish youth selection teams. With the U-18 selection of the country, he took part in the 1998 European Championship in Cyprus and was able to win this tournament with a 4: 3 on penalties against the selection of Germany . This was the first only title the Irish won at a U-18 European Championship.

He played his first international A match for Ireland on March 25, 1998 against the Czech Republic . He scored his first international goal against Malta on October 14, 1998. Since the qualifying match for the 2006 World Cup against the Faroe Islands on October 13, 2004, Keane has been the national record scorer. He broke the record of 21 goals set by Niall Quinn . In 2006, then national coach Steve Staunton made him captain of the national team. Keane also holds this position under the new coach Giovanni Trapattoni .

With the Irish national team, Keane took part in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . His first goal in this tournament came in the second group game against the German national team , when Keane managed to equalize to 1-1 in added time. With another draw against Cameroon and a 3-0 win against Saudi Arabia , in which Keane scored the 1-0 goal, Ireland survived the group stage and advanced to the round of 16 against Spain . Also in this game Keane was successful late and converted a penalty in stoppage time. Nevertheless, the Irish lost the game on penalties and were eliminated from the tournament. With the national Keane also denied the qualifications for the European Championship in 2000 and 2004 , World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008 , missed it but each to qualify for the final round. The Irish also failed in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in the relegation against France with a controversial goal. However, Keane qualified with the national team for the European Championship 2012 , but retired there after the group stage .

On August 11, 2010, he made his 100th international appearance against Argentina . On June 4, 2011 he scored his 50th international goal in the eighth minute of the European Championship qualifier against Macedonia in Skopje . His 51st goal followed shortly afterwards to make it 2-0 in the 37th minute. He scored two more goals in the playoff game of the European Championship qualification against Estonia. On February 29, 2012, he led the Irish team for the 50th time as captain in the friendly against the Czech Republic . He is the Irish record captain. In the friendly against the selection of Georgia (4-0) on June 2, 2013, in which he also scored two goals, he closed the Irish record international player Shay Given with 125 internationals. Since the World Cup qualifier on June 7, 2013, in the 3-0 win against the Faroe Islands, in which Keane scored all three goals, he has been the record player for Ireland.

Since the resignation of Miroslav Klose , Keane has been the player with the most international goals still active with 67 international goals.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , at the age of 35, he was accepted into the Irish squad as the oldest field player on his team . In the first game against Sweden, he was substituted on in the final quarter of an hour after the 1-1 equalizer for the Scandinavians had fallen shortly before. Against Belgium he came into the game again in the final phase, but he stayed on the bench for the last two games until he was eliminated in the round of 16.

On August 24, 2016, he announced his retirement from the national team. In his 146th and last international match against Oman on August 31, 2016, he scored his 68th goal for the national team with the goal to make it 2-0. The game ended 4-0.

After his career as an active player, Keane moved to the coaching staff of the Irish national team.

Others

On June 7, 2008, in Ballybrack, Keane married his longtime partner, the former Miss Ireland contestant , Claudine Palmer.
