Club Deportivo Chivas USA , shortly CD Chivas USA , was a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from Carson , California . The team played in Major League Soccer, the highest professional soccer league in the United States and Canada, from 2005 to 2014.
The franchise was founded in 2004 and was the eleventh team to take part in the MLS. The Chivas USA were originally a subsidiary of the Mexican soccer club Deportivo Guadalajara .
Jorge Vergara was the owner of the franchise until the beginning of 2014 . The MLS bought back the rights to the franchise and stopped all activities at the end of the 2014 season. After the franchise was dissolved, it was announced that a new team from Los Angeles, Los Angeles FC , would take this place from the 2017 season .
history
The Club Deportivo Chivas USA was founded on August 2, 2004. In their first game, which was played on April 2, 2005 at the Home Depot Center against DC United, the team lost 2-0. Only one of the following nine games could be won. For this reason, the team's first coach, Thomas Rongen, was appointed sports director and the previous assistant coach, Javier Ledesma, took over his duties on an interim basis. On June 3, 2005, the Dutchman Hans Westerhof was the new coach of the Chivas. Even this did not bring the hoped-for turnaround. At the end of the season, the Goats were in last place in the Western Conference with just four wins from 32 games. Westerhoff was then not employed for the next season. The first participation in the US Open Cup ended, after a victory against the Charlotte Eagles , with the loss to Los Angeles Galaxy in the round of 16.
On November 23, 2005, Bob Bradley took over the position of head coach. Under him, the Chivas were able to play successfully in the 2006 season compared to the previous year. With a total of 10 wins and only 9 defeats, the team reached 3rd place in the Western Conference and thus qualified for the play-offs. There the Goats met Houston Dynamo . The first game could be won 2-1. In the second leg Houston won 2-0, whereby the Chivas were eliminated. Bradley received the "MLS Coach of the Year Award" and Jonathan Bornstein received the "MLS Rookie of the Year Award" as the best young player in the league. At the end of the season Bradley took over the position of coach of the US national soccer team . His successor was the former MLS player Predrag "Preki" Radosavljević .
The 2007 season was the Chivas' most successful season to date. The team reached the 1st place in the Western Conference , but retired as in the previous year in the first play-off game. Preki was named Coach of the Year and regular goalkeeper Brad Guzan was named the league's best goalkeeper.
In 2008 CD Chivas USA took part in an international tournament for the first time. In the second edition of the SuperLiga , the team took third place in the group stage. With a second place in the Western Conference the team reached the play-offs again and just like in the two years before they lost in the first encounter. For the first time, Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Klještan have nominated players for the MLS All-Star Game . Kljestan was one of the strongest players in the team this season and was even voted into the best team in the league at the end of the season.
The 2009 season ended with a fourth place in the Western Conference. Zach Thornton took over the position of goalkeeper after Brad Guazan moved to Aston Villa. He was later also voted “MLS Goalkeeper of the Year”. In the play-offs, the Chivas lost to LA Galaxy, despite a 2-2 win in their first game. Martin Vasquez took over as the new head coach at the end of the season. Radosavljević previously left the team by mutual agreement.
The Chivas started the 2010 season with two defeats. At the end of the regular season, the team finished last in the Western Conference. Only DC United achieved fewer points in the overall table. Because of this poor performance, Martin Vasquez was fired after only one year in office.
Despite the poor performance in the league, the team reached the semi-finals in the US Open Cup. There they were defeated by the Seattle Sounders 1: 3.
On January 4, 2011, Robin Fraser was named as the new coach.
On August 29, 2012, Vergara and his wife Angélica Fuentes took over the shares in the franchise from Antonio and Lorenzo Cué. This made them the sole owner of the Chivas. But even in the coming years, the team could not qualify for the play-offs.
On February 20, 2014, MLS bought the Vergara franchise back. The club will be dissolved at the end of the 2014 season. A new club from Los Angeles is planned as a replacement from the 2017 season.
Colors and coats of arms
CD Chivas USA's home shirts were in the same colors as Deportivo Guadalajara's. The logo was also based on that of the Mexican parents' association, but the eleven stars that stand for the championships at Deportivo Guadalajara are omitted.

The home games were played at the StubHub Center, which is located on the California State University campus, Dominguez Hills , Carson, California. The 27,000-seat stadium was shared by the Chivas with Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Harder Stadium, which is located in Santa Barbara, and the Titan Stadium in Fullerton were available as alternative options. These stadiums were mainly used when Galaxy and Chivas have to play home games on the same day, e.g. B. in the US Open Cup.
Fans and sponsors
Fan groups
The largest group of fans were the Legión in 1908 . This group is represented internationally and also supports the Mexican representation of the Chivas.
The Union Ultras were the first fan group that formed around Chivas USA. It consists of around 150 members. In the stadium they had their seats directly opposite the Legión 1908 area. The Ultras only supported the Chivas USA and not CD Guadalajara like the Legion.
One of the newest fan groups was the Black Army 1850. They were founded in 2010.
Sponsors
As of May 16, 2007, the largest Mexican paint manufacturer, the Comex Group, was the main sponsor of Chivas. Up until the 2010 season there was no sponsor imprint on the team's jerseys. On April 1, 2010 the Goats ran for the first time with sponsor advertising. The sponsor was Extra, a chain of convenience products which belongs to Grupo Modelo .
In addition to the supplier Adidas , The Home Depot , Time Warner Cable, The Walt Disney Company , Budweiser , National Automotive Parts Association and the VISA International Service Association were other sponsors of the team.
In addition, on January 25, 2011, the Chivas signed a contract with the Corona Beer Company .

FSN West / FSN Prime Ticket and KDOC-TV had the rights to broadcast all Chivas games which are not broadcast nationally. FSN West / FSN Prime Ticket broadcast most of these games. In 2010, all of the Goats' games were shown on either national or regional television.
The partner for the transmission in Spanish was the radio station W Radio 690 AM and the television station KWHY-TV, which is a subsidiary of NBC Universal .
target group
The target group for the team were Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent living in the Los Angeles area. This ethnic group had so far largely ignored the MLS and concentrated more on the Mexican league . Club owner Jorge Vergara promised that the main language of the club will be Spanish . This was already expressed in the advertising slogan "Adiós soccer. ¡El fútbol está aquí!" (Spanish: goodbye, soccer. Soccer is here!).
Rivalries
At the local level, the Los Angeles Galaxy were a rival to CD Chivas. This was the only real local derby of the MLS. Both teams played the "Honda SuperClassico" during an MLS season. In contrast to the other "MLS Two Team Cups", no trophy was awarded to the winner.
There was a greater rivalry between CD Chivas and Real Salt Lake . The club from Utah as included in the MLS Chivas of 2005.

Previous trainers
The first coach of the Chivas was the Dutchman Thomas Rongen . After only ten league games, however, he was quickly dismissed. The first coach with American citizenship was the future US national coach Bob Bradley . The last head supervisor was Wilmer Cabrera .
