Real Salt Lake (RSL) is a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from Sandy, Utah , a suburb of Salt Lake City . The franchise was founded in 2004 and started playing in the 2005 season . The team colors are red, cobalt blue and gold. The team won the 2009 MLS Cup in the final against LA Galaxy .

The name Real comes from the Spanish language and means "royal". In football , especially in Spain, there are many clubs that have the name Real in their name (e.g. Real Madrid , Real Saragossa , etc.), each of which goes back to a royal naming privilege.

Team owner Dave Checketts wanted his club to work closely with a successful European football club and get a brand name that was clearly associated with the sport of football. The name was received with skepticism by the fans. It has often been suggested that the team should have a name that more reflects the Salt Lake City region. In contrast, the name of the NBA team Utah Jazz has little to do with the region.

history

Before Real Salt Lake was admitted to the MLS as a franchise, Utah Blitzz was a team in the USL Second Division . After the founding of RSL, this team, which won the championship in its last season, disbanded. Blitzz trainer Chris Agnello became RSL's assistant trainer. Head coach was John Ellinger , who previously coached the US U-17 national team. The design of the jerseys was inspired by the Spanish national team .

In the first season, the team did not manage to qualify for the play-offs and was at the end of the season in 5th place in the Western Conference. Until the 2007 season, the team did not make it past the last or penultimate place in its conference.

In November 2006 the franchise signed a multi-million dollar sponsorship agreement with the company "XanGo". At the beginning of the 2007 season, RSL was the first MLS team to have a shirt sponsor. In December 2006, RSL made headlines with the signing of US soccer talent Freddy Adu from DC United . However, he moved to Benfica Lisbon for two million US dollars in July 2007, after only 11 games for the club .

Jason Kreis has been Real Salt Lake's coach since May 2007 . The former player of the club took over the team from John Ellinger .

After Salt Lake reached the semi-finals of the play-offs in 2008 , the team made it to the final in 2009 and won the MLS Cup and thus the championship on November 22, 2009. Opponent was Los Angeles Galaxy . Real Salt Lake is also qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League 2010/2011.

On June 4, 2010, during a press conference for the President of the United States , Barack Obama honored Real Salt Lake by wearing a team jersey with his name and number 10 at the end of the press conference.

On April 6, Real reached the final of the 2010/11 CONCACAF Champions League . In the semifinals, Deportivo Saprissa was beaten 3-2 on both sides. In the final, the team met CF Monterrey from Mexico, after a 2-2 draw in the first leg, Real lost 1-0 in the second leg and had to be content with second place.

Coat of arms and colors

The official colors of the franchise and the team are claret red , cobalt blue and real gold .

Stadion

In the founding year of the franchise, plans for a football-specific stadium were made and approved by the local authorities. However, the financing of this project turned out to be difficult. Opponents of stadium construction were of the opinion that one should not spend millions of taxpayers' money on a stadium that might not pay off. Team owner Checketts stated that he would like to keep the team in Salt Lake City, but set an ultimatum and threatened the team to move.

In the meantime, delegations from Rochester and St. Louis have expressed an interest in the franchise . On the last day of the ultimatum, however, a financing plan was decided. In August 2006, the foundation stone of the stadium was laid in the presence of the teams from Real Salt Lake and Real Madrid .

Until the opening on October 9, 2008, the team played at Rice-Eccles Stadium , which is located on the campus of the University of Utah .

Rivalries

After RSL was accepted into Major League Soccer in 2005, there were now two MLS franchises in the Rocky Mountains . The fans of RSL and the Colorado Rapids then created the "Rocky Mountain Cup" to maintain and expand the rivalry. The winner of the "Rocky Mountain Cup" is the team that wins the direct comparison during the regular season . Real Salt Lake has won this comparison three times (2007, 2008 and 2009).

In addition to the Colorado Rapids , a certain rivalry with CD Chivas USA has developed. Both teams were inducted into the MLS in 2005.

In September 2006, representatives from the Spanish first division club Real Madrid and Real Salt Lake signed a 10-year cooperation agreement. Mainly it was about strengthening and promoting football in Utah. In addition, friendly matches have been held between the two teams and Real Salt Lake is allowed to do its pre-season training at the Madrid training ground. The construction of a youth center for up to 200 children and young people in Salt Lake City was also agreed. The age groups U-12 to U-18 should be trained and educated here. Since the youth center was not realized, RSL built its own in Casa Grande, Arizona in 2010 .
