Álvaro Alberto Saborío Chacón (born March 25, 1982 in Ciudad Quesada , Alajuela ) is a Costa Rican national soccer player .

Club career

Mexico

Saborio began his career in Mexico with CF Monterrey , where he began his professional career in 2000 with the farm team Coyotes de Saltillo and played 7 games in the second-rate Primera A.

CD Saprissa

After a senior season in Mexico, he returned to Costa Rica in summer 2001 and signed for CD Saprissa. Before that, he played for several Mexican youth teams for several years. In the 2003/04 season he was the top scorer of the season with 25 goals. During his time at Saprissa, he won a championship title and the CONCACAF Champions Cup with the team . He also took part in the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup . There he scored two goals and ended up having to share first place in the scorers list with three other players.

FC Sion

After participating in the 2006 World Cup for Costa Rica, he was signed by FC Sion .

His good performance brought him to the attention of Stoke City coach Tony Pulis . He wanted to sign Saborío in summer 2009. But it did not come to that, because Saborío was loaned to Bristol City .

Bristol City

He played his first game for Bristol on September 13, 2009 against Coventry City . A week later he scored his first goal. In February 2010 he left Bristol City and dissolved the contract with FC Sion.

Real Salt Lake

In March 2010, he joined Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer . There he was able to convince in the first season. In 2010 the team was able to achieve the hit rate in the MLS (45 goals). Saborío himself scored twelve goals. He scored six goals in the CONCACAF Champions League.

After this successful season he signed a contract as a designated player for the next four years. He was the first player in the MLS franchise to receive such a contract status. Saborio played in four and a half years, 100 Major League Soccer games, and scored 51 goals.

Move to DC United

On July 15, 2015 Saborio left RSL and was traded to DC United in exchange with Luis Silva . After 31 games in which he was able to score 10 goals, he was sacked by United on November 14, 2016, after two seasons.

Return to Saprissa

On January 10, 2017, Saborío announced his return to Costa Rica and signed a one-year contract with Deportivo Saprissa . He played in four games and scored one goal before terminating his contract with Saprissa on February 9, 2017 and ending his playing career.

AD San ​​Carlos

From January 2018 he played for AD San ​​Carlos in the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División and won the 2018/2019 Clausura with the club.

National team

Saborio was the top scorer in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup with eight goals and was in Costa Rica's provisional World Cup squad. Due to a metatarsal fracture, he was unable to take part in the World Cup. On July 11, 2015, Saborio completed his 100 international match for Costa Rica, becoming only the 5 player to break the hundred mark for Costa Rica. In January 2017, Saborio ended his active international career after 108 internationals, in which he scored 35 goals. At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 he was used again and scored the first goal in the 1: 2 defeat against Haiti.
