history

Old club logo

The club was founded on July 16, 1935 by Roberto Fernández and has played in the highest league in Costa Rica since 1949. The club was named after Ricardo Saprissa , the sponsor of the first kit. The club color has been purple since 1937. According to legend, this color was chosen after the original red and blue dresses were mistakenly washed together.

From March 29 to June 10, 1959, the Saprissas team went on a world tour. During the world tour, Saprissa visited 38 locations in 25 countries and played 22 games, 14 of which were won.

Deportivo Saprissa is known for the fact that their squad consists only of players from Costa Rica. Because of its playing strength, the club was nicknamed El Monstruo Morado (German: "the violet monster"). The main national competitor is LD Alajuelense , and both clubs usually negotiate the championship among themselves.

In 2003 the club was in a critical financial situation and so the Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara , who also supported or owned other football clubs, took over 67% of the shares in the club and became its president. To make the club more modern, he changed the traditional dark purple to a dark purple, introduced a new club crest, on which the monster could be seen, and changed the mascot twice. Vergara's actions met with little approval from the fans, the new mascot introduced in 2010, the monster Ricky was even insulted so much that Vergara was forced to make the original dragon Elliot a mascot again.

Saprissa is currently one of the most successful clubs in CONCACAF . In 2005, Saprissa won the CONCACAF Champions Cup for the third time , taking part in the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup. At the Club World Cup, the team reached 3rd place with a 3-2 win over Al-Ittihad from Saudi Arabia .

In 2010 Saprissa was named “Team of the 20th Century in the CONCACAF Zone” by the IFFHS .

In spring 2011 the company "Horizonte Morado" (German: "violet horizon"), consisting of 7 businessmen, including a representative of the television station Teletica, succeeded after two years of negotiations with Vergara to take over 67% of the shares in the club and the club thus to be given back into the hands of Costa Ricans. Horizonte Morado, led by the new President Saprissas, Juan Carlos Rojas, decided to revive the club color dark purple, which was used until 2003, as well as the old coat of arms in a slightly modified form. In addition, the company announced that it would hold regular general meetings and maintain a constant dialogue with supporters, sponsors, etc.

Others

In addition to Saprissa’s participation in the first division, Saprissa also took part in the second division of the Costa Rican division, the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División , under the name “Generación Saprissa” until 2016 . Generación Saprissa, "Saprissa de Corazón" until the 2012/13 season, was the club's U-23 team.
