Jorge Mario Olguín (born May 17, 1952 in Dolores , Buenos Aires Province ) is a retired Argentinian football player and coach. He took part in the football world championships in 1978 and 1982 with the national team of his home country and won the world championship in 1978.
Player career
Club career
Jorge Olguín began his football career in 1971 with CA San Lorenzo de Almagro from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . There he won his first championship in his second season at San Lorenzo, in 1972 the Metropolitano competition was won six points ahead of the Racing Club from Avellaneda . In the same year also succeeded the triumph in the Nacional competition, where San Lorenzo prevailed in the final against River Plate . After one could not win a title the following year, it succeeded again in 1974 with the victory in the Nacional. This time they won with a point ahead of Rosario Central . After that he couldn't win a title with San Lorenzo. In 1979 Jorge Olguín left the club and moved to CA Independiente from Avellaneda. In his three years at Independiente the defender was able to win a national title, in 1983 he won the Metropolitano one point ahead of his old club CA San Lorenzo de Almagro. This allowed the club to participate in the Copa Libertadores of the following year , which one also won. Olguín was no longer in Avellaneda at the time of the Libertadores win, he had left the club in 1983 and moved to the Argentinos Juniors . With the club he won the Primera División twice in 1983 and 1984 , and in 1985 he helped the Argentinos Juniors win the Copa Libertadores for the first time. In the final, Olguín, Sergio Batista and Claudio Borghi's team prevailed on penalties in the play-off against América de Cali from Colombia , after each team had won 1-0 once. Olguín converted his penalty on penalties. He played with the Argentinos Juniors until 1988 before ending his active career.
National team
In the Argentine national soccer team Jorge Olguín was used 60 times between 1976 and 1982. Argentina's national coach César Luis Menotti called him into the South American squad for the 1978 World Cup in his own country. At the World Championships, Olguín acted as a regular in defense and played in all seven games of the Argentine on the way to winning the title, which they achieved in the final at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires 3-1 after extra time against the Netherlands . Four years later in Spain , Olguín was back in the game. Again he was part of the regular formation of Menotti's team. This time he completed five out of six possible games, while his team failed in the second round. After the World Cup in 1982, Jorge Olguín ended, like many other world champions from 1978, their career in the Argentine national football team. He made a total of 60 international matches, but he did not succeed in one goal.
Coaching career
After his active career, he worked as a coach at several Argentinian, Japanese and Costa Rican clubs such as CA Colón , Deportivo Español , Avispa Fukuoka and in 1996 at the Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa . However, he did not celebrate any great success.
