Héctor Rodolfo Baley (born November 16, 1950 in San Nicolás de los Arroyos ) is a former Argentine football player. The goalkeeper took part in the soccer world championships in 1978 and 1982 with the national team of his home country and won the world championship title in 1978.
Career
Club career
Héctor Baley began his football career at the Estudiantes de La Plata club from the capital of the province of Buenos Aires . At the club of coach Osvaldo Zubeldía he only acted as a substitute goalkeeper, because regular goalkeeper Alberto Poletti could not get past Estudiantes at the end of the 1960s. Baley stayed with the club until 1971, but only made three league games in three years. As a substitute, however, he won the Copa Libertadores three times in 1968 , 1969 and 1970 . After he left Estudiantes in 1971, he was without a club for two years before he was signed by CA Colón in 1973 . He stayed there until 1976, without celebrating much success, but made 79 appearances as a regular for the club from Santa Fe . In 1976 he went to CA Huracán . Another two years later he left the club from Buenos Aires for CA Independiente from Avellaneda . There he was involved as a goalkeeper in winning the Nacional Championship of 1978, when the team around Enzo Trossero , Omar Larrosa and Ricardo Bochini won 0-0 and 2-0 against CA River Plate in the final . After three years with Independiente, he moved to CA Talleres in Córdoba , the second largest city in Argentina. After 156 league games with Talleres, he ended his career there in 1987 at the age of 37.
National team
In the Argentine national soccer team , Héctor Baley made thirteen appearances between 1976 and 1982. He was appointed to the South American squad for the 1978 World Cup in his own country by national coach César Luis Menotti . At the World Cup he was the third goalkeeper behind Ubaldo Fillol and Ricardo La Volpe and was not used. Meanwhile, his team won the world title for the first time after beating the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in the final at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires . Four years later in Spain the world title was to be defended, but this time the Argentine selection was eliminated in the intermediate round . Héctor Baley was also nominated for this world championship , but was not used again. In total, Baley played 13 times for Argentina. One of his most famous games in gaucho dress was a friendly game against Germany in 1982 , where Argentina also scored 1-1 thanks to a good goalkeeper Baley.
