action

The book begins with several flashbacks, all of which indicate Janie's extraordinary ability and where she stands today. Janie Hannagan is an independent 17 year old student at Fieldridge High School. She lives with her alcoholic mother and tries to find ways to finance her college studies. What sets Janie apart from her peers is her ability to witness other people's dreams. Janie discovered this skill at the age of eight when she witnessed the dream of a businessman giving a presentation in his underwear. From that day on she experiences it as a curse to have to constantly experience and suffer other people's dreams and nightmares, and to gain insight into fears and wishes. This is how Janie discovers the secrets of her fellow human beings, but she cannot confide in anyone because everyone would think she was crazy. Whenever someone falls asleep at a distance from Janie, she is automatically paralyzed, blind and drawn into the person's dream. The people in the dream usually ask her for help, but she doesn't know what to do. All of these incidents become a problem for Janie, especially in her senior years, because most of the time she has no control over the situations. People around her become suspicious of her strange behavior, especially Carl. While most classmates have typical dreams of adolescent fears, Carl, the mysterious loner, has terrifying dreams that Janie cannot cope with.

After several encounters, Janie and Carl fall in love on a class trip to Canada. During this time, Carl noticed Janie's abilities. While Carl helps Janie keep her secret, their relationship can't stand the pressure of other people, secrecy, and Carl's growing reputation as a drug dealer.

But when Janie and Carl split up, their need for each other grows. When Carl seems to break away from Janie and delve further into the drug trade, Janie realizes that things are not always what they seem and she is now able to use her powers to help other people. With the help of Miss Stubin at Heather Home, Janie discovers that she is a "dream catcher" and that she has the strength to help other people with their dreams that are haunting them.

The high point of the story is when Carl, along with other Fieldridge students and parents, is arrested for drug abuse. Janie experiences a dream that helps the police and allows her to free her friends.
