Career

Club career

Alonso, 2012

Norberto Alonso began his football career in 1970 at River Plate , the club for the rich in Buenos Aires . However, he himself grew up in a poor area of the city after moving to Buenos Aires with his parents as a child from Vicente López. Alonso celebrated his first championship title with River Plate in 1975 when the team of coach Ángel Labruna , once part of the famous La Máquina of River Plate in the 1950s, took first place ahead of CA Huracán . After winning the Metropolitano championship, he also won the title in the Nacional competition in the same year, where they came first before Estudiantes de La Plata . Norberto Alonso acted as captain and playmaker for River Plate when they won the title. Despite his leading role in the team, he left Buenos Aires in 1976 and moved to France to Olympique Marseille . There he only made 17 appearances and after just one year he went back to River Plate. At River Plate, a team had now formed that could win a number of national championships in the following years. In addition to Alonso, members of this team were Daniel Passarella , captain of the 1978 world championship, goalkeeper Ubaldo Fillol and defender Roberto Perfumo . By 1981 Norberto Alonso won the Argentine championship five times with River Plate. In 1981 he left River Plate again and this time went to city rivals CA Vélez Sársfield , where he completed 73 games in the Primera División in two years and returned to his old club in 1983, where Alonso let his career end until 1987. In these four years he won three championships again with River Plate. After he had ended his active career in 1987, he took over the post of coach at River Plate for a short time in 1989.

National team

In the Argentine national football team , Norberto Alonso made 15 appearances between 1978 and 1983, in which he scored four goals. He took part in the 1978 World Cup with Argentina in his own country. He was not actually intended for the squad by national coach César Luis Menotti , but under pressure from General Carlos Alberto Lacoste , a high-ranking member of the military junta , which required a certain number of players from River Plate for the World Cup, the national coach Alonso had to nominate. In the tournament, however, he was only used for a few minutes, as José Daniel Valencia and later Mario Kempes , top scorer of the World Cup with six goals, were seeded in his position . Norberto Alonso wore the number 1 shirt in the World Cup, although he was a midfielder and that number is usually reserved for the goalkeeper. This condition was due to the fact that the Argentines numbered their team alphabetically and Alonso came first. In 1983 he was used a few more times by the new national coach Carlos Bilardo before he relied more on young players like Diego Maradona or Jorge Burruchaga in Alonso's position.
