Ubaldo Matildo Fillol (born July 21, 1950 in San Miguel del Monte , Buenos Aires Province , Argentina ) is a retired Argentine football player .

Fillol, 2006

The goalkeeper Fillol began his career in 1969 at the Argentine provincial club Quilmes AC and in 1972 moved to the capital for Racing Club Avellaneda . After moving to River Plate in 1974 , he became one of the best goalkeepers in Argentina and was nominated for the squad of the Argentine national team at the 1974 World Cup in Germany . At this tournament, however, he was still in the shadow of goalkeeper Daniel Carnevali . This should change after the tournament. In 1977 he was named Argentina's Footballer of the Year and was the goalkeeper of the world championship team at the 1978 World Cup in his home country. He was also the number one goal in Argentina at the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 , although he never wore this number at a World Cup tournament (1978 number "5", 1982 number "7") because the Argentine players use the alphabet got their shirt numbers (exception Diego Maradona ).

Ubaldo Fillol is the only goalkeeper, besides Dino Zoff , who was used at the 1974, 1978 and 1982 World Cups. In 1974, however, he was between the posts in just one game (Argentina - GDR 1: 1). Four years later, he and Mario Kempes were among the top performers and celebrated heroes who won the World Cup in their own country.

After a brief interlude in 1983 with Argentinos Juniors , he left Argentina in 1984 and played in Brazil with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . At the age of 35, he ventured to Europe in 1985 and played for Atlético Madrid for over a year . In 1987 he went back to his home country to Racing Club and ended his long and successful career in 1990 with Vélez Sársfield . In the meantime he worked as the goalkeeping coach of the Argentine national team and took part in this role at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
