Taça Rio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Taça Rio (Portuguese for Rio Cup ) is a football trophy in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil . It was launched in 1978 by the newly founded national association Federação de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FERJ) and has been played continuously with two interruptions since 1982. It should not be confused with the Copa Rio association cup .

mode

The Taça Rio used to be the second phase of the state championship of Rio de Janeiro after the Taça Guanabara . Until 2013, the state championship was determined in finals between the two cup winners. If a club has won both trophies in one season, it is automatically awarded the national championship.

In 2014, the game mode was reformed, with the Taça Rio being devalued at a consolation price compared to the Taça Guanabara, as its win is no longer associated with qualifying for the championship finals. All 16 teams of Série A compete against each other once in a league mode, of which the winner of the Taça Guanabara is the winner at the end of the season. This and the three other best-placed athletes then carry out the state championship in an elimination round. The two bottom of the table in the overall ranking are relegated to Serie B of the state championship. The Taça Rio, in turn, is determined from the results of those 12 teams that missed the qualification for the elimination round, whereby their results from the games against the four top teams are not taken into account in this calculation. The first-placed team on this shortened bill, usually fifth or sixth place overall, wins the Taça Rio.
