The Americano Futebol Clube , AFC for short , is a Brazilian football club in Campos dos Goytacazes in the state of Rio de Janeiro .
history
It was one of the leading "provincial clubs" of the state of Rio de Janeiro before the time as the state of Guanabara in 1975. With six championships he is the record holder of the 1978 set "Campeonato Fluminense". After their merger with the championship “Campeonato Carioca” in 1979, it fell behind, like all other clubs in the state, compared to the capital city clubs, which are more economically and personally positioned.
The last great club success marked in the 2002 season, winning the two championship phases of the Taça Guanabara and the Taça Rio . However, one had benefited from the absence of the large city clubs at the Torneio Rio-São Paulo . According to the mode practiced at the time, winning the two game phases would have been equivalent to winning the national championship, but the Rio national association FERJ had set a final round in which the first of the season should compete against the city clubs returning from the Rio-São Paulo tournament. In the final round, Americano FC reached the final, but lost it to Fluminense FC , so that the club only had to come to terms with the runner-up title.
After that, the club experienced a sporting downturn, in which it was first eliminated from the Brazilian national championship in 2006 as a relegated Série C and in 2012 as bottom of the table even slipped from the first division of the state of Rio de Janeiro to the second division, which is still playing today .
