Campos dos Goytacazes , officially Portuguese Município de Campos dos Goytacazes , is a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil . The population was estimated at 507,548 inhabitants as of July 1, 2019. It is located on the Rio Paraíba do Sul and is 280 kilometers northeast of the capital Rio de Janeiro .
Campos dos Goytacazes extends over an area of around 4,032 km² (2018) and is by far the largest municipality in the state. The residents are called campistas .
Mainly sugar cane is grown and processed in the region , followed by coffee , tobacco and tropical fruits. Economically more important, however, according to the findings on the offshore continental shelf, is its role as the center of oil production .
One of the city's attractions is the ancient basilica of “São Salvador” from 1652 . Campos dos Goytacazes has quiet beaches with houses of local fishermen and increasingly with weekend houses.
The high waves around the mouth of the Rio Furado can be used for surfing . In the municipality is also the Lagoa Feia (German: ugly lake ), the second largest freshwater lake in Brazil with 170 km².

Surrounding communities are São Francisco de Itabapoana , São João da Barra , Quissamã , São Fidélis , Cardoso Moreira , Italva , Bom Jesus do Itabapoana and Mimoso do Sul in the state of Espírito Santo .

The city has a tropical climate, Aw according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 23.6 ° C. The average rainfall is 1073 mm per year. In the southern summer there is less rainfall than in the southern winter.

Of the 463,731 inhabitants in 2010 according to the census, 45,006 lived in rural areas and 418,725, around 90%, in urban areas.
