Rio Claro , officially Município de Rio Claro , is a place and a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . The community is located approx. 128 km west of the capital Rio de Janeiro and had an area of 846.797 km² (2018) an estimated population of 18,529 people on July 1, 2019, the Rio-Clarensians ( rio-clarenses ). The official founding date as Vila de Rio Claro is May 19, 1849, the place received the right to self-government as a city on December 27, 1929.
The parish has been divided into the following districts since 1994:

- Passover Três
- São João Marcos
- Lídice
The neighboring communities of Rio Claro are Angra dos Reis , Bananal (SP), Barra Mansa , Itaguaí , Mangaratiba , Piraí and Volta Redonda .
The main economic activities are agriculture (bananas, beans, corn), agricultural chemistry and poultry farming.
