Mesquita is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . Until 1999, Mesquita was part of Nova Iguaçu . The population was estimated to be 171,020 as of July 1, 2016.
geography
Mesquita has an area of 41,471 km² (2016) and belongs to the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro . A volcanic crater and a remnant of the Mata Atlântica lie on the territory of the Munizip .
The neighboring municipalities are Belford Roxo , Nilópolis , Nova Iguaçu , Rio de Janeiro and São João de Meriti .
history
Mesquita only became independent on September 25, 1999 after a long legal battle. Before that, today's município formed a district of Nova Iguaçu. It is the youngest town in the region known as Baixada Fluminense . The place was named after Jerônimo Roberto de Mesquita , the second Baron Mesquita.
