Itatiaia , officially Portuguese Município de Itatiaia , is a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil . According to an estimate as of July 1, 2018, it had 31,537 inhabitants on 241 km². It lies on the border between the state of Rio de Janeiro and the state of Minas Gerais . Surrounding cities are Resende and Bocaina de Minas . It is 174 km from the capital, Rio de Janeiro .

Itatiaia is located on the Serra da Mantiqueira and is the namesake of the Itatiaia National Park ( Parque Nacional de Itatiaia ).

Place name

The place name Itatiaia comes from the Tupí-Guaraní and means "pointed stone".
