The Itatiaia National Park ( Portuguese Parque Nacional do Itatiaia ) was created on June 14, 1937 ; it was the first national park in Brazil . Today it has an area of ​​300 km². It is located in the Serra da Mantiqueira in the states of Minas Gerais (in the area of Itamonte , Alagoa and Bocaina de Minas ) and Rio de Janeiro ( Itatiaia and Resende ). The park is about equidistant from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro , between the coordinate 22 ° 16 '0 "  S , 44 ° 34' 0"  W and 22 ° 28 '0 "  S , 44 ° 42' 0"  W .

The lower, south-eastern part of the park with waterfalls and small hiking trails can be easily reached from Via Dutra near Itatiaia, the region of the peaks is more difficult from the west of the state border.

The park is located in the subtropical area, due to the altitude there are unusual things in Brazil such as ice and in some years snowfall. The dry season is the southern winter from June to August. The highest peaks are the Pico das Agulhas Negras (2787 m), Prateleiras (2548 m) and Couto. There are some endemic plants . The Mata Atlântica (mostly secondary) coastal primeval forest grows below 1100 meters , above it mostly primary forest .
