Resende , officially Portuguese Município de Resende , is a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil . She had estimated at the 1 July 2019 131,341 residents who live in a community square kilometers area of approximately 1099.3 and Resendenser ( resendenses are called).

Resende was originally settled by the Puri Indians under the name Timburibá . The first Europeans arrived around 1715. Today's municipality is divided into different districts, which are called Resende, Agulhas Negras, Bulhões, Visconde de Mauá , Pedra Selada, Fumaça and Engenheiro Passos and contains 81 Bairros. Resende lies partly on the foothills of the Serra da Mantiqueira mountains.

history

Resende was originally the territory of the Puri Indians , who called it Timburibá . In 1715 the land was given to Bandeirante (a privately funded expeditionary) Garcia Rodrigues Paes Leme, who became one of the first non-native settlers.

In 1744 the bandeirante Simão da Cunha Gago from São Paulo received permission to undertake an expedition to this area. He named it Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Campo Alegre da Paraíba Nova when he arrived .

The area now developed quite rapidly, which was also due to its favorable location between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and the proximity of the border of the state of Minas Gerais . Soon indigo and sugar production as well as various plantations arose. Coffee production started around 1770 and soon developed into the basis of the local economy.

On September 29, 1801, the village of Resende was granted its first city rights as a Vila under the name of Vila de Resende by the 13th Viceroy and 2nd Conde de Resende, General José Luís de Castro . The place grew quickly as a coffee center and in 1848 Resende was given the status of municípios , a self-governing municipality. At that time, about 19,000 people lived in Resende, including around 9800 free citizens and 8600 slaves. From 1850 on, the coffee crisis hit, which led to a change in production at the fazendas. Since the beginning of the 20th century, more and more industry settled in this area and coffee growing lost more and more of its importance.

In 1943 the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN), which forms the basis for the Brazilian Army, is established. The importance of the city increased in the course of the 20th century through further industrial settlements.

economy

Resende is located on both sides of the Rio Paraíba do Sul in the Vale do Paraíba , one of the economically strongest regions in Brazil. Local production of Volkswagen commercial vehicles was taken over by MAN Latin America in 2009 . Even Nissan operates a car plant here. In addition, coffee and milk are the main economic goods in the agricultural sector , as well as uranium extraction and enrichment.

In Resende there is the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN), the "Military Academy of the Black Peaks", named after a mountain range up to 2987 m high in the nearby Itatiáia National Park.

climate

Resende has a tropical mountain climate Cfa. The annual average temperature is around 19 ° C and fluctuates between 33 ° C in January and 5 ° C in July. Most rainfall occurs between November and March.
