Vassouras , officially Portuguese Município de Vassouras , is a city in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . It is located about 80 km northwest of Rio de Janeiro , the capital of the state. In a current area of 535.6 km 2 (2018), previously 552.4 km 2 , according to the 2010 census, 34,410 inhabitants, called Vassourens, lived. The population was estimated to be 36,896 as of July 1, 2019.
history
The name is derived from a tree species of the mallow family that is common in the area , which was called guaxima or vassourinha . The history of the place is closely connected with the cultivation of coffee in the Vale do Paraíba at the time of the province of Rio de Janeiro in the Brazilian Empire . The place was first elevated to Vila de Vassouras in 1833 and received the right to self-government on September 29, 1857.
Infrastructure
Vassouras is the seat of the Universidade Severino Sombra (USS).
Vassouras can be reached via the federal and state highways BR-393 , RJ-115 , RJ-121 , RJ 125 and RJ-127 .
The main branches of income are agriculture with gardening, pig and horse breeding, trade and tourism.
