Duque de Caxias (pronunciation: ˈduki dʒi kaˈʃiɐʃ ), officially Município de Duque de Caxias , German Duke of Caxias , is a city in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . The population in Duque de Caxias was estimated at 914,383 people on July 1, 2018, living on 467.271 km² (2017). It is the third most populous city in the state after Rio de Janeiro and São Gonçalo . The city belongs to the Baixada Fluminense , a series of suburbs of Rio with a total of about 3 million inhabitants.

Duque de Caxias is considered one of the most dangerous suburbs in Rio de Janeiro with a high homicide rate. The local police were heavily involved in drug trafficking on several occasions. On February 7, 2014, the pacification Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora (UPP) entered the Mangueirinha de Caxias favela .

geography

The center of Duque de Caxias is about 20 km northwest of Rio de Janeiro. The place is named in honor of Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias , who was born in the area. The place is northwest on Guanabara Bay , but has no beaches or ports. The southern part merges seamlessly into Rio de Janeiro as an agglomerate. The northern part of the 4th District ( Distrito de Xerém ) borders the mountainous reserve Reserva Biológica do Tinguá .

The climate is tropical according to the Köppen and Geiger Aw climate classification . The average temperature is 23.2 ° C. Winters are drier than summers, with an average annual rainfall of 1299 mm.

history

The first clearing of the lands took place around 1566. In 1931, the Distrito de Caxias was founded within Nova Iguaçu and received the right to self-government through a spin-off on December 31, 1943.

In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the allocation to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Rio de Janeiro and the Região geográfica intermediária Rio de Janeiro . It is also part of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro .

City administration

Executive: In the 2016 local elections, Washington Reis was named Prefect of City (Mayor) for the 2017-2020 term, running for the MDB . The legislature lies with a city council (Câmara Municipal) of 30 elected city councilors ( vereadores ) under the presidency from 2017 of Sandro Ribeiro Pedrosa, known as Sandro Lelis.

Sports

The city has two local football clubs. The Duque de Caxias FC rose in 2008 to the Série B , the second highest division in Brazil. The EC Tigres do Brasil was only founded in 2004 and took part in the First Division of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship for the first time in 2009 .
