Nova Iguaçu , officially Município de Nova Iguaçu , is a city in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . As of July 1, 2016, the population was estimated at 797,435. The municipality covers 524 km² . It is the fourth largest city in the state. It belongs to the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro and the Baixada Fluminense , a series of suburbs of Rio with a total of around 3 million inhabitants.
The urban area also includes almost 200 km² of the Mata Atlântica primeval forest , as well as the Reserva Biológica de Tinguá and the protected area of the Serra de Madureira , which are under UNESCO protection.
