São João de Meriti [ ˈsɐ̃w ʒuɐ̃w ˈdʒi meˈɾitʃi ], officially Município de São João de Meriti , is a city in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . As of July 1, 2018, the population of São João de Meriti was estimated at 471,888 inhabitants. With a population density of 13,024 inhabitants per square kilometer (2010), the municipality is one of the most densely populated on the continent and has thus earned the nickname Formigueiro das Américas - "anthill of America".

São João de Meriti has an area of 35.216 km² (2018) and is located in the Baixada Fluminense region in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro .

Soccer
There are many traditional clubs such as Coqueiros FC, founded in 1924, or Tomazinho FC from 1930. The Audax Rio de Janeiro EC, which dates back to 2005, had some success . Formerly known as Sendas and Pão de Açúcar according to the owners, the club won the Copa Rio in 2010 , a tournament for lower-class clubs that qualified for participation in the national fourth division, the Série D. In addition, the team was occasionally second-rate at the state level.
