Araruama , officially Portuguese Município de Araruama , is a city in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro on the coast of the Laguna de Araruama . The distance to the capital Rio de Janeiro is 108 km. The city had 112,008 inhabitants , called Araruamens , at the 2010 census . As of July 1, 2016, the population was estimated at 124,940 inhabitants. The area is 638.023 km ² and the population density is 175.5 people per km ² .

City administration

Lívia Soares Bello da Silva, known as Lívia de Chiquinho, of the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT) has been the city prefect (executive) since the local elections in 2016 for the 2017 to 2020 term of office . The legislature lies with a municipal chamber, the Câmara Municipal, consisting of 17 councilors. Carlos Alberto Siqueira da Silva (PPS) is president for the 2017 to 2018 term.

On the Atlantic Ocean are the beaches of Praia de Massambaba and Praia do Vargas .
