Saquarema , officially Município de Saquarema , is a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil .
Saquarema is located in the Costa do Sol region about 73 km from the capital Rio de Janeiro . The city had 87,704 inhabitants according to an estimate as of July 1, 2018 and has beautiful beaches (such as Barra Nova, Boqueirão, Itaúna, Jaconé, Vilatur) and the city beach in Vila (Saquarema). This beach offers the conditions for surfing because of the high swell .
The city lives mainly from tourism and is also called the state capital of surfing. National and international surfing competitions take place here regularly. Parts of the beach belong to the Parque Estadual da Costa do Sol state park .
In 2003 a large volleyball center was opened. The national team of Brazil trains in this center.
