Valença , officially Portuguese Município de Valença , is a city in Brazil in the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro .

The city at an average altitude of 560 meters covers approx. 1305 km² and is the second largest in area in the state of Rio de Janeiro. As of July 1, 2016, the population was estimated at 73,997.

history

The place was founded on August 17, 1823 as Vila de Valença and on September 29, 1857 raised to the city with self-government rights of the province of Rio de Janeiro .

Valença is the seat of the diocese of Valença .
