The Baixada Fluminense is a densely populated region in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro , which borders the city of Rio de Janeiro to the north . About 3 million people live there, which makes the region the second most populous in the state.

The Baixada includes the municipalities of Duque de Caxias , Nova Iguaçu , São João de Meriti , Nilópolis , Belford Roxo , Japeri, Queimados and Mesquita . Sometimes the municipalities of Magé and Guapimirim to the east of Rio de Janeiro and the Paracambi , Seropédica and Itaguaí to the west and north-west are also included.

In the early 20th century and especially in the second half of the Baixada, many immigrants from other parts of the country landed in the hope of prosperity in Rio de Janeiro. That led to a population explosion. To this day, the region is notorious for a high crime rate, poverty, poor infrastructure and social problems.
