Luís Murat (Luís Morton Barreto Murat, 1861–1929), Brazilian poet lawyer and co-founder of the Brazilian Academy of Literature

Luís Morton Barreto Murat (born June 18, 1861 in Resende , Brazil , † July 11, 1929 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian journalist and poet of realism and symbolism . He was one of the founders of the Academia Brasileira de Letras .

Life

Luís Murat first studied law and social sciences at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo (FDUSP) . He later moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he worked as a journalist.

He published his first volume of poetry Quatro poemas in 1885. In 1886 he founded the short-lived magazine Vida Moderna (1886–1887) together with Artur de Azevedo , for which soon contributors such as Araripe Júnior , Xisto Bahia , Coelho Neto , Alcindo Guanabara , Raul Pompeia and Guimarães Passos were won. In 1891 he wrote the foreword for his collection of poems Versos de um simples ( Poems of a Simple One ).

A larger dramatic poem appeared in 1890, initially in the features section of Gazeta de Notícias , about the national hero Tiradentes . In the first years of the republic, various efforts for renewal emerged in poetry. Poets, many of whom later also belonged to the founders of the Brazilian Academy of Language and Poetry, grouped themselves together as a reaction to the earlier Romanticism in Parnasianismo brasileiro , which had its origins in the French Parnassians , and to which Murat was also counted.

In 1891 he was elected a deputado federal member of the constituent assembly of his state Rio de Janeiro .

Academia Brasileira de Letras

Luís Murat was one of the founders of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, which was established in 1897. As the namesake for seat number 1, which he held until his death, he chose Adelino Fontoura (1859-1884), one of the representatives of Parnasianismo. Afonso d'Escragnolle Taunay was the successor to the chair .
