The Amazônia National Park is a protected area in Brazil . It was designated in 1974 and is 10,662 km² in size. The area is about halfway between Belém and Manaus along the Rio Tapajós . The BR-163 highway , one of the main arteries of the Amazon, begins between the Amazônia and Jamanxim national parks . The National Park Amazônia serves to protect the Brazilian Amazon - rainforest , which by the climate change and deforestation is threatened.
