The Jaú National Park ( Portuguese Parque Nacional do Jaú ) is the second largest in Brazil with an area of ​​2,272,000 hectares after the Montanhas do Tumucumaque National Park . It is located on the Rio Negro in the state of Amazonas - just over 200 km northwest of Manaus in the Amazon basin. The protected area named after the Rio Jaú , a tributary of the Amazon, was founded on September 24, 1980 and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000 . In 2003 it was expanded to a total of over 52,000 km² to form the “ Central Amazonian Nature Conservation Complex ” (Portuguese Complexo de Conservação da Amazônia Central ).

Jaguars , tapirs , manatees and crocodiles live on the temporarily flooded areas . The park can be reached from Manaus by boat.
