Chapada dos Veadeiros
The Chapada dos Veadeiros is a plateau in the northeast of the Brazilian state of Goiás .
National park
The Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros was created on January 11, 1961 to protect springs from several river systems and the diverse flora and fauna in the Cerrado . Its 655 (according to other sources 2,365.7) km² are located in the area of the municipalities Alto Paraíso de Goiás , Cavalcante , São João d'Aliança , Teresina de Goiás and Nova Roma . It was originally founded as Parque Nacional do Tocantins with a ten times larger area to protect nature in the vicinity of the then newly founded capital Brasília. Twice the reserve has been significantly reduced, enlarged again in September 2001 and in December 2001 it was together with the Emas National Park to the World Heritage of UNESCO explained.
In June 2017 it was enlarged from around 650 to 2400 km 2 . As of October 28, almost 30% of the area (650 km 2 ) in the park was destroyed by a fire, which was presumably started as people were seen on motorcycles with petrol cans. In 2017, 10,921 km 2 of state-protected nature reserves had already been destroyed in Brazil , also to drive away indigenous people.
Many former residents of the region lived from the exploitation of minerals and other natural resources, and since 1990 they have been retrained to become tourist guides. Since the turn of the millennium, tourism has increased significantly. In the northeast of the park there are still conflicts over fire, hunting, mineral mining and logging.
The Chapada lies in a tropical, semi-humid climate in the Cerrado at heights between 600 and 1650 m. The mean temperature is 22 ° C, the annual rainfall between 1500 and 1750 mm. The driest is September with frequent fires, the rainy season with heavy showers lasts from November to February.
Attractions
The largest river is the Rio Preto , a tributary of the Rio Tocantins , with large waterfalls such as the 120 m and 80 m high Rio Preto falls or the Cariocas in the 40 m deep canyons that attract visitors (each 6 km hike). The evening view from Mirante de São Jorge at the entrance to the national park near São Jorge (Goiás) is popular .
There are other attractions in the vicinity of São Jorge and Alto Paraíso de Goiás .
fauna and Flora
In the Chapada there is not only the Buriti palm that is typical of the Cerrado . Savannah-like and wooded areas alternate. In addition to many types of orchids, there are typical Brazilian species such as Pau d'Arco Roxo , Copaíba , Brazilian pepper tree , Jerivá palm, and Babaçu palm .
The animal world is also diverse. Some species are at significant risk of extinction, such as pampas deer , marsh deer , jaguar , maned wolf and the Tauchentenart Pato Mergulhão . There are also rheas (Brazilian emas ), seriemas , tapetis , armadillos , anteaters , capybaras , tapirs , toucans , macaws and king vultures .

The entrance to the national park can be reached from Brasília via the BR-020, then 220 km north on the GO-118 to Alto Paraíso de Goiás . From there it is another 28 km via the partly unpaved GO-239 to the town of São Jorge at the entrance to the park. It is 260 km from Brasília and 460 km from Goiânia.
