Alto Paraíso de Goiás , officially Portuguese Município de Alto Paraíso de Goiás , is a Brazilian political municipality in the northeast of the state of Goiás . It is located 230 km north of the Brazilian capital Brasília and 420 km northeast of the capital Goiânia . The population was estimated on July 1, 2019 at 7624 inhabitants, who live with a population density of 2.65 inhabitants per km² on a large community area of ​​around 2594 km² and are called Alto-Paraisenses ( alto-paraisenses ).

The districts with their localities also belong to Alto Paraíso de Goiás: Boa Esperança, Capoeira da Velha, Cidade da Fratemidade, Escola Bona Espero , Mato Alto, Moinho and São Jorge.

In the municipality is the highest point of the Chapada, the Pouso Alto with 1676 m and the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park .

Hydrographically, Alto Paraíso de Goiás drains into the Rio Tocantins - Araguia basin to the north. Alto Paraíso de Goiás is located east of the Serra da Mesa reservoir , into which the south-western border river of the municipality, the Rio Tocantizinho (German: small Tocantins ), flows.

The source rivers form many spectacular canyons and waterfalls in the heavily weathered highland plain outside the national park .

Climate and vegetation

The climate is typically tropical and semi-humid with mean daytime temperatures in summer around 20 - 24 ° C with a humidity of 75 to 80% and heavy rainfall, climate classification according to Köppen and Geiger Aw . In winter, May to September, there is drought and drought lasting four to five months. The vegetation is characterized by the Cerrado - ecosystem .

On the northern border with the municipality of Cavalcante is the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park , which is very popular with hikers and eco-tourists .

Access to the national park is only permitted with a guide. The entrance is in the village of São Jorge on the south side of the park, about 36 km west of Alto Paraíso de Goiás on the unpaved road GO-237.
