The Serra da Mesa reservoir ( Portuguese: Lago de Serra da Mesa ) is located in the municipality of Minaçu in the north of the Brazilian state of Goiás . It is formed by a dam that dams the Rio Tocantins . The reservoir is the fifth largest in terms of an area of around 1,784 (or 1,794) km² and the largest reservoir in Brazil in terms of volume of 54.4 billion m³.
Fish farming is also carried out in the reservoir. The government estimates that Serra da Mesa could produce 34,000 tons of fish annually. The state of Goiás wants to increase the annual production of fish to a total of 297,000 tons, which is more than 15 times the current amount of 18,700 tons. Fish such as Tilápia, Tambaqui, Pirapitinga, Lambari, Pirarucu , Pirarara and Jurupensém are bred. Currently (as of September 2013) there are 22 fish farms on the reservoir.
