Joaquim Guedes
Joaquim Manoel Guedes Sobrinho (* 1932 in São Paulo ; † July 27, 2008 ) was a Brazilian architect .
Guedes was known for rejecting formalisms and preferring architecture that responded to everyday needs. He was a critic of Oscar Niemeyers and the main direction of Brazilian architecture. Although he was usually attributed to the Paulista School , he was therefore considered by many colleagues as a "black sheep". Guedes worked on more than 400 projects; since 1955 he worked in São Paulo. His family houses and city projects, including the design for the new city of Caraíba in the state of Bahia , were best known .
