The Serra da Mesa power plant ( Portuguese Usina Hidrelétrica (de) Serra da Mesa ) is a hydropower plant in the Brazilian state of Goiás , which damms the water of the Rio Tocantins to the Serra da Mesa reservoir ( Portuguese : Lago de Serra da Mesa ). The municipality of Minaçu is located approximately 20 kilometers northeast of the power plant .

The beginnings of the project go back to the 1970s. In 1981 Furnas Centrais Elétricas was granted the concession to build hydropower plants on the Tocantins. Construction began in the second half of the 1980s but was interrupted during the reign of Fernando Collor de Mello . The company CPFL completed the construction work and received electricity purchase rights for 30 years amounting to 51.54% of the average electricity generated in the power plant. The first machine went online in September 1998.

The data on the costs of Serra da Mesa vary: they are 1.1 and 1.7 billion US $ .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists mainly of an earth embankment dam with a clay core and a maximum height of 154 m. The length of the dam crown is 1,500 m. The volume of the dam is 12,057,558 m³.

The weir system with the flood relief consists of 5 gates with a width of 15 m and a height of 20.4 m. A maximum of 15,000 m³ / s can be discharged. It is to the right of the dam.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 460 m (max. 461.5 m at high water) above sea level , the reservoir extends over an area of around 1,784 (or 1,794) km² and holds 54.4 billion m³ of water - 43.25 of which can be Billion m³ are used to generate electricity. The minimum stowage destination at which the machines can still be operated is 417.3 m. The reservoir is the fifth largest by area and the largest by volume in Brazil.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 1,275  MW, the Serra da Mesa power plant is the third largest power plant operated by the electricity producer Furnas Centrais Elétricas . The average annual production fluctuates: in 2007 it was 5.378 billion kWh and in 2009 it was 3.099 billion kWh.

The 3 Francis turbines are located in an underground machine house with a length of 137, a width of 29 and a height of 69.8 m. The turbines were supplied by SADE and the generators by ABB . The nominal speed of the turbines is 120 / min. The associated generators have a nominal voltage of 15  kV and a nominal frequency of 60 Hz. In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 15 kV is increased to 500 kV using single-phase power transformers. The switchgear is on the left side of the river below the dam.

According to the Global Energy Observatory, the power plant is owned by Furnas Centrais Elétricas (48.46%) and CPFL (51.54%); Furnas is specified as the operator. Other sources only speak of a 51.54% power purchase right owned by CPFL.

Others

The company CPFL fought in court to sell 51.54% of the electricity generated in the power plant from April 1, 2014 to April 16, 2028, which corresponds to an annual average of 345.4 MW, to Furnas at a net price of R $ 156.70 per MWh (R $ 182.90 including surcharges) for sale. However, this is below the price of R $ 271 per MWh that CPFL was able to demand according to the current A-0 electricity auction. According to the CPFL, the price on the spot market is up to R $ 822.83 per MWh.

The impoundment of the reservoir began on October 24, 1996 and it took 18 months for the reservoir to fill. During this time, the river bed below the dam dried up over a length of 40 km.

On March 26, 2014, the minimum flow rate of 300 m³ / s was lifted by the national water authority ANA until the end of May in order to raise the water level of the reservoir.
