Bonópolis , officially Portuguese Município de Bonópolis , is a small town with a large rural area in the north of the Brazilian state of Goiás .

It borders the municipalities of Amaralina , Mundo Novo , Novo Planalto , Porangatu and São Miguel do Araguaia .

From the 1960s, trees of the Gabiroba species from the myrtle family , which were used for furniture production, were cut down in the area . More settlers with families settled around the Fazenda des Abrão Lopes, the region belonged to the municipal town of Porangatu and was declared the District of Bonópolis on January 8, 1988 . The district was spun off from the Distrito de Cruzeiro do Sul from Porangatu with land gain and the city was given independence as Bonópolis on December 27, 1995 by law No. 12800/95.

The first mayor (city prefect) was John Albino Fernandes, called John Muranga. In the local elections in 2012, Cristina Beatriz Rodrigues de Oliveira Moura, known as Bete, of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) was elected for the term from 2013 to 2016 .
