history

At the beginning of the 19th century, travelers who came via the Araguaia Valley and Pirenópolis and Corumbá de Goiás began to settle in the area of the present-day city. Such a branch was founded in the headwaters of the Ribeirão das Antas , also called Campos Ricos because of its fertile soil . In 1859 this hamlet consisted of 15 buildings and a school.

Legend has it that in 1860 the farmer's wife Ana das Dores , who was traveling in the area, lost an animal bearing the image of her saint, Saint Anne. When the workers found the animal, it persistently refused to get up and did not release the box with the image of the saint. This was interpreted to mean that the saint wanted to stay. Ana's son Gomes de Sousa Ramos built a chapel in 1870 with the help of the surrounding residents, in which the image of the saint remained. The landowners gave land so that in 1873 the parish of Santana das Antas was founded. In 1887, the place was raised to the status of a village and, thanks mainly to the efforts of Professor José da Silva Batista (called Zeca Batista), on July 31, 1907, the town was named Anápolis. The first prefect was José Fernandes Valente from 1935 to 1940.
