Alagoa is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Portalegre . It has 669 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The present-day community was probably formed during the settlement policy after the conclusion of the Portuguese Reconquista . Alagoa has been an independent municipality since the 16th century.

Culture and sights

In the municipality, the historical public fountain Fonte Velha and the primary school building are under monument protection. Another architectural monument here is the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Alagoa , also Igreja de São Miguel after its patron saint of St Michael .

Alagoa is located in the Serra de São Mamede nature reserve . Hiking trails and nature trails are laid out, and lookout points ( port .: Miradouros ) offer wide views.
