Bananal ( German banana plantation ) is a municipality and city in the far east of the Brazilian state of São Paulo on the border with the state of Rio de Janeiro . In 2016, 10,821 people lived there on 616.4 km² of community area.

The municipality, 308 km from the capital São Paulo and around 150 km from Rio de Janeiro , is 454 meters above sea level and borders on Barra Mansa , Rio Claro and Angra dos Reis in the state of Rio de Janeiro as well as São José do Barreiro and Arapeí . The Rio Bananal river of the same name flows through the village .
