Guanabara , officially Portuguese Estado da Guanabara , German state Guanabara , was a Brazilian federal state from 1960 to 1975 . It was a city-state and identical to the city of Rio de Janeiro .

history

In 1834 the place Rio de Janeiro from the province of the same name Rio de Janeiro , today's state of Rio de Janeiro , was elevated to a city and became the imperial capital of Brazil. In addition, it received the special status of a ( Município Neutro ), a "neutral city". With the end of the monarchy in 1889, the Município Neutro became the federal district, the Distrito Federal .

When the Brazilian capital was moved to Brasília in 1960, this city became the new Federal District . The previous federal district became the state of Guanabara, named after the Bay of Guanabara , on the western side of which lies the city of Rio de Janeiro.

In 1960 the Palácio Tiradentes became the seat of the Legislative Assembly of the State ( Assembleia Legislativa do Estado da Guanabara ) (ALEG). The Constituição do Estado da Guanabara constitution was announced on March 27, 1961 and published in the same year.

Guanabara was the smallest state in Brazil and had the additional peculiarity of not having any administrative subdivisions, i.e. communities. The state government of Guanabara fulfilled both the tasks of such and that of a city administration.

Association with the state of Rio de Janeiro

On July 1, 1974, the President of the then military government of Brazil, General Ernesto Geisel , signed the law which determined the unification of the states of Guanabara and Rio de Janeiro with the city of Rio de Janeiro as capital on March 15, 1975. This law was not undisputed at its time, especially since it was not preceded by any public discussion. Nowadays, in retrospect, the association is primarily rated positively for economic reasons alone.

The guanabara state regalia are still used today by the city of Rio de Janeiro. The coat of arms remained unchanged, while the coat of arms in the center of the flag was colored red.
