Tarantini was considered one of the best left-backs in the world in the early 1980s. He experienced his international breakthrough at the Football World Cup in 1978 in his own country. He played all his team's games from the start and, as an offensive defender, scored the goal to make it 2-0 in the last group game of the second final round in a 6-0 win over Peru . In the final he won with his team against the Netherlands 3: 1 a. V. and became soccer world champion.

At the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 he was also involved in all games, but the defending champion was eliminated after defeats against Brazil and Italy in the second round. In the club he played for the Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires . He had little success in Europe. He played at Toulouse FC and a season for Birmingham City in 1978/79 , but was dismissed without notice due to indiscipline at the end of the season.
