Carlos Salvador Bilardo (born March 16, 1939 in La Paternal , Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine football coach and former player.

Career

Bilardo was born in the La Paternal neighborhood, a neighborhood with Sicilian immigrants, in Buenos Aires. He started playing football at an early age and played in his youth in the Argentine national youth team that took part in the 1960 Olympic Games .

In 1961 he joined the second division club Deportivo Español, where he became the team's best goalscorer. Over time, he was increasingly used in defensive midfield. He continued his medical studies at the University of Buenos Aires. In 1965 he went to the Club Estudiantes de La Plata , where he established himself as a tactician. With him, the club won the Copa Libertadores three times in a row between 1968 and 1970 . From 1983 to 1990 he coached the Argentine national team , which he led to victory at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and second place at the 1990 World Cup in Italy .

After the 1990 World Cup, the Brazilian Branco claimed that he was the victim of an Argentine trick: while the game was interrupted, the Argentine team masseur handed him a bottle of water, which is said to have been mixed with a sedative. Branco got sick after enjoying the water. Maradona later confirmed Branco's version, saying that his coach Carlos Bilardo was behind it. Carlos Bilardo is considered one of the most influential coaches in Argentina, as several of his national players such as José Luis Brown , Nery Pumpido , Jorge Burruchaga , Sergio Batista , Miguel Ángel Russo and Diego Maradona later took on coaching duties. At the 2006 World Cup , he worked as a commentator for the Argentine broadcaster Canal 13 . At the 2010 World Cup he served as national coach Maradona as sporting director.
