Néstor Raúl Rossi , commonly known as Pipo Rossi (born May 10, 1925 in the Parque Patricios neighborhood of Buenos Aires , † June 13, 2007 in Buenos Aires), was an Argentine football player and coach .
With Argentina , the defender won the Copa America twice . At club level, he was part of the golden era of both River Plate in Buenos Aires and the CD Los Millonarios in the Colombian capital Bogotá .
His enormous throat strength allowed him to make himself understood across the entire field of play at all times. Since he liked to take advantage of this, he was also given the nickname La Voz ( The Voice ).
Player career
The number 5 center-back, who often went on excursions into midfield, began his professional career in 1945 at River Plate and won the championships in 1945 and 1947. He was part of the famous la Maquina ("machine"), one of the most outstanding club teams of all time. Major players here were Juan Carlos Muñoz , José Manuel Moreno , Adolfo Pedernera , Angel Labruna and Félix Loustau . In the same year as Rossi, Alfredo Di Stéfano River Plate also joined.
In 1949 he moved to the Colombian capital Bogotá to CD Los Millonarios. Pedernera and Di Stéfano - with whom Rossi had a close friendship throughout their life - also switched to the Millonarios at that time. The team soon developed into the Balet Azul - the blue ballet - and was considered the best club team of its time. This reputation was also manifested on some legendary tours to Europe with great success. Rossi stayed in Bogotá for six years, winning the championship four times by 1954 and the Colombia Cup in 1953 .
1955 returned Pipo Rossi back to River Plate and played there until 1958. In this phase he won three more times the Argentine championship. In total, he won five national championships with River Plate.
He let his playing career end at the Bonaren suburb CA Huracán .
He took part in the Copa America several times with the Argentine national team and won the title in the 1947 and 1957 draws . He also took part in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.
Coaching career
After Rossi finished his playing career, he worked as a coach. His first stop was at Huracán . From 1961 to 1962 he coached River Plate. In 1974 he returned to River once more. The Argentine world championship captain of 1978 Daniel Passarella made his debut.
In 1965, Pipo Rossi took over the training of Rivers main competitor, the Boca Juniors, following his friend Adolfo Pedernera, who was prevented by a car accident, and became champion with the club.
Rossi's other coaching stations were Racing Club Avellaneda in 1963, CD Los Millonarios , FC Granada 1971-72 in Spain, Club Cerro Porteño in Paraguay, Club Atlético Atlanta , again in Spain FC Elche and the All Boys in Buenos Aires and CA Colón in Santa Fe
In 1962 he also stood for a game of the Argentine national team.
Private
On May 30, 1957, Pipo Rossi married Fátima Akil, with whom he had daughters Alejandra Pía and Fabiola Paula. The latter in turn married soccer player and coach Jorge Burruchaga , who scored the winning goal in the 1986 World Cup final .
