Juan Carlos Muñoz (born March 4, 1919 in Avellaneda , Buenos Aires Province , † November 22, 2009 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine football player and coach .

With the Argentine national soccer team he won the Copa America . At club level, he was part of the legendary Máquina , one of the most outstanding club formations in football history, at CA River Plate in the 1940s , and won four championships with the club.

career

Muñoz first played in the youth team of the CA Independiente club . This association was based in Muñoz 'home district, the industrial suburb of Avellaneda at the gates of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. From there he moved to CA River Plate, which was dominated by Carlos Peucelle in 1939, when he was only 19 .

At his new club he soon played his way as a right winger in the regular formation and in 1941 was able to win his first Argentine championship . When the Máquina was born in 1942 , the machine, as River Plate's team that dominated Argentine football in those years was called, he was a member of this formation.

Muñoz was known for his cross runs to the touchline, from where he served the stars of the team, the central attackers Adolfo Pedernera , José Manuel Moreno and Angel Labruna , with his crosses . Félix Loustau completed the Máquina on the left wing .

By 1950 Muñoz won the title of Argentine champion three more times. In total, he scored 39 goals in his 184 league fights for River. In 1951 he moved to CA Platense in the northern periphery of Buenos Aires. With this club he ended in 1953, after 39 games with 3 more goals, his active playing career and then worked there for a year and a half as a coach.

National team

With the Argentine national team he won the Campeonato Sudamericano in Santiago de Chile in 1945 under coach Guillermo Stábile . In total, he was called up to the national team 11 times and scored two goals.

Later years

In later years Juan Carlos Muñoz worked as a sports journalist for various radio stations.

Since the death of Félix Loustau in 2003, Muñoz has been the last remaining member of the legendary Máquina . He himself died of a heart attack in Buenos Aires at the age of 90.
