Alfredo Rubén Basile Moreno (born November 1, 1943 in Bahía Blanca , Argentina ) is a former Argentine soccer player and current soccer coach . From 1991 to 1994 and from 2006 to 2008 he was the coach of the Argentine national soccer team .

Life

Player career

Basile began his career at Club Bella Vista in his hometown. From 1964 to 1970 he played for Racing Club and then for CA Huracán . At his clubs, Basile won the Campeonato Argentino in 1966 , the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup in 1967 and the Campeonato Metropolitano in 1973 . He ended his playing career in 1975.

Coaching career

After his retirement, Basile coached several Argentinian teams, including Rosario Central , Racing Club (won the Supercopa Sudamericana in 1988 ) and CA Huracán . He also coached Atlético Madrid in Spain . In 1991 and 1993 he won the Copa America twice with the Argentine national soccer team . He later coached the Boca Juniors , with whom he was very successful and, in addition to two national titles, won the Copa Sudamericana in 2005 and the Recopa Sudamericana in 2005 and 2006 . In July 2006 he was again the Argentine national football coach. After two years, he resigned in October 2008 and was replaced by Diego Maradona .

On March 20, 2017, Basile suffered a stroke and was hospitalized in Buenos Aires.
